 St. Andrews. One of the most fascinating towns in Europe. It was the ecclesiastical Capital of Scotland and the Castle was once the Palace of the Archbishop. It has Scotland's oldest University.
The home of Golf is here with the Royal & Ancient Club and nearby is a Museum of Golf on the Links.
In the town there are excellent shops and restaurants, the Sea Life Centre for the family and the Woollen Mill beside the 18th Fairway is worth visiting.
 Leave St. Andrews by A917 to Crail, where you should leave the car (in one of the car parks) and explore the quaint harbour and traditional whitewashed houses with crow-stepped gables and pan-tiled roofs, crowding round the streets behind the waterfront.
Continue on A917 to Anstruther - visit the Scottish Fisheries Museum. Cross back over Fife on B940 to Cupar. West of Cupar on the A91 is the Scottish Deer Centre. Complete the day with a meal in Staggies Restaurant (excellent local fare in elegant Georgian Courtyard), have a guided tour of the Centre and learn about the animal which is so bound up in Scotland's rich heritage.
